Government funding brings new opportunities to Emerging
Communities
The Australian Working Together
project was primarily designed by our Centre Coordinator
Mr. Nick Nikolich J.P to assist members of new and
emerging communities more easily assimilate into the
Australian way of Working and Living. An
Information Session was held with key community members
to enable the Centre to design the most appropriate
approach to further training. As a result of these
sessions, courses were specifically designed to cater
for the individual needs of the group. Over the
project period several training courses were held with
dedicated Workplace Trainers. Lessons were paced
according to the groups needs, and covered the
Australian workplace, its requirements and expectations,
and an acceptable work ethic.
Participants were very happy with the
information provided and will use the courses to further
improve their level of education and gain better
employment. We are very pleased to report that so
far 5 participants have enrolled
with
recruitment agencies in search for casual jobs. This
group were very happy with the course and have
appreciated the direction we have provided to them.
Some of the
participants had
difficulty
with the English language so we employed a translator to
help translate the course to them. These participants we
noticed were very determined to succeed. They were doing
English courses in the morning and in the afternoon
attended the courses offered by our Centre. This group
were very thankful for the help we have provided to
them.
Some
participants have also successfully registered with
employment agencies and have gained casual jobs as a
result of our Trainer providing them with the
appropriate information as to where to seek the right
advice into gaining employment and work experience.
During the experience we found that
many participants had an issue with time management. Due
to differences in cultural background time is not
important and lateness was an issue. This was seen
initially as a major set back however as the courses
progressed we noticed that the participant’s time
management improved and we are pleased to report they
now understand that potential employers may not look too
kindly on late arrival.
At the end of a highly successful
project the Centre invited participants and their
families to join the organiser's of the project in a
casual get together and a BBQ enjoyed by all.
